The role of an effective project manager is crucial to the outcome of any successful project. They must plan, execute and finalize projects all within strict deadlines and within budget.

In 2012, BICSI released the Registered Telecommunications Project Manager (RTPM). An RTPM oversees and coordinates the interaction between designers, engineers, installers and technicians when new information and communications technology (ICT) industry projects are being developed or undergoing construction. As technology continues to grow faster each decade, the demand also increases for proficient telecommunications project managers. To become a successful telecommunications project manager, individuals need a thorough understanding of ICT, personnel management and project management.

RTPM exam candidates are tested on their ability to understand and apply a vast collection of telecommunications project management principles, concepts, tools and technology.

BICSI telecommunications project management courses serve as a career path for those seeking advanced knowledge in this area. Telecommunication project managers, project coordinators, lead technicians, project team leaders and individuals seeking new career paths in this rapidly growing field are encouraged to earn this credential. The PM110 course is recommended for candidates preparing to take the RTPM examination.

Requirements and Qualifications

To sit for the RTPM credential examination, you must have:

  • A minimum of two years of approved and verifiable experience in Project Management, such as planning, execution and closing of any project. The Project Management experience does not have to be directly related to telecommunications, but telecommunications experience is a plus. Experience must be within the last six years.

Renewal Information

The RTPM credential is valid for three years. Within each three-year period, all RTPMs must obtain a minimum of 36 BICSI continuing education credit (CEC) hours. The RTPM credential must be renewed every three years.

The RTPM examination is comprised of 100 multiple-choice questions. You are allotted 2-hours to complete the exam. The exam is designed to test your knowledge in the Duty Statement areas of the BICSI RTPM Exam Content Outline/Blueprint and Job Task Analysis.

You must achieve a minimum of 70 percent on the exam to pass.

Pass/fail results will be provided at the testing center after completing the exam. A score report is also provided to all unsuccessful candidates. The score report will reflect a percentage of correct answers in each section of the exam, not an actual score. Results are not provided over the phone for CBT exams.

Candidates must be able to use a computer and mouse. Special needs may be requested on page 10 of the application.

Candidates are not allowed to bring anything (phones, watches, hats, etc.) into the testing room. All necessary items will be available during the exam, including calculators and a whiteboard for scratch paper.

There are no scheduled breaks during the CBT exam. If a break is needed, the break will count towards the 120 minutes you have to complete the exam.

The exam is structured to allow you to challenge a question that you think may be unclear, confusing or incomplete. You may also flag a question and return to it at the end of the exam. Challenged questions that are meaningful and relevant to the exam question will be reviewed by the Registrations and Credentials Supervision (RCS) Committee. If you answer the question incorrectly and the committee determines a rescore changing your final score from fail to pass, the credentialing department will notify you by email within 30-days of the exam. The time spent on challenging questions is allotted in the 150 exam time total.
