Paying it Forward
I am now on week six of recovery after my kneecap surgery from the bad black ice fall in late February. This means I am just starting physical therapy. To me, this marks the real beginning of my healing process and returning to a normal life, or a “new” normal.
Throughout this whole ordeal, I have come to appreciate so many people for so many things, previously taken for granted. Picture your life without being able to walk or use your arms as they are needed for steadying yourself on crutches. Think of family members, co-workers, friends and neighbors, who would rush to help you, even if you didn’t even ask. Whether it was as simple as a phone call, or sending a card, or larger tasks, such as running errands, providing meals or tedious daily care by my husband and family members from out-of-state—my mom from AZ, my sister from VT or my daughter from CA, who re-landscaped our front yard—I am overwhelmed by these selfless acts and I am very humbly grateful.
“Pay it forward” has always been my motto. And now, I truly have experienced what that saying means. I hope that many of you reading this can stop and think of a kind act someone has done for you, whether in your professional or personal life, and take time to thank them or return the favor. I feel that serving as your BICSI Northeast Region Director is just one way I’m paying it forward—whether quickly answering your calls or emails on simple questions or directing a member with a path to further their ICT career or providing you all with great Region meetings and local events.
I was hoping to attend the BICSI Canadian Conference (April 27-30), but unfortunately that will not be physically possible during my recovery. I hope you are attending. Check out all of the great happenings at that event here. And, what a beautiful setting in April—downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. Please share some of your experiences, either by submitting a photo or a note to me at email@example.com.
I hope to see most of you at the next BICSI Northeast Region Meeting on May 8 at Citizens Bank Park (Home of the Phillies) in Philadelphia. That event will be a homerun, complete with a ballpark tour. Click here to see the great line-up of speakers, check out the venue and sign up to attend; you can sign up to become a vendor by clicking here.
There are so many great opportunities for you in BICSI—from speaking at a Conference or Region event, to furthering your education. Check out all the opportunities at www.bicsi.org. Get out and make changes for you, your career and for those around you. Pay it forward and you will be amazed at the return on your investment!
Gratefully serving as your Northeast Region Director,
Carol Everett Oliver, RCDD, ESS
