Dealing with Life’s Curve Balls
On Tuesday, February 25, a day before I was to depart on a South American cruise with my mother, a fluke snow/ice storm hit Pennsylvania and I slipped on black ice at work, which literally brought me to my knees, in more ways than one. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where it was discovered that my kneecap was shattered. Surgery was scheduled for Wednesday, March 5; the 6-week healing process now begins.
Until now, I have never had any broken bones and the timing couldn’t have been worse. We did not have trip insurance on the Regent Seven Seas cruise line; so, in addition to a painful injury, we have taken a big hit on our bank account (lesson learned). Unfortunately, even communicating to the top dog of Regent Cruise Line doesn’t command any consideration. Some businesses are truly black and white. This makes me realize how fortunate I am to be involved with an association like BICSI, as it is truly a people-helping-people organization. Thank you to the many members who have already called or emailed me with heartfelt messages.
Even though I am a hard one to keep down, I will not be able to personally attend the first Northeast Region Meeting
on March 20 at Turf Valley in Ellicott City, MD. Luckily this is a joint Region Meeting with the Southeast Region. Chuck Wilson, RCDD, NTS, OSP, the Southeast Region Director, is stepping up to take the lead with incredible help and support from Matt Odell, RCDD, a Northeast Assistant Region Director and Bob Hertling, RCDD, OSP, a super volunteer and also the most recent recipient of the Larry G. Romig Committee Member of the Year award.
I will be there in spirit and hope to call or video in. And, I am sorry to miss it because it is going to be a great venue and agenda. If you haven’t signed up, please do so on BICSI's website today. Or, if you would like to have a tabletop exhibit, you can sign up here
. As in the past, the Northeast is offering package deals for our sponsors.
Carry the torch for me as I certainly plan to be back on my feet by the May 8 Region Meeting
Proudly Serving as your Northeast Region Director,
Carol Everett Oliver, RCDD, ESS
