OSP is designed for professionals who design or support outside plant telecommunications infrastructure. OSP validates knowledge of the pathways, spaces, cabling, protection, documentation, and coordination needed to connect communication systems beyond the building.
Outside plant work requires design decisions that account for route selection, underground, buried, and aerial infrastructure, environmental exposure, permitting, right-of-way considerations, protection, maintenance access, and long-term system performance.
OSP may be appropriate for telecommunications designers, consultants, engineers, project managers, contractors, and other professionals involved in outside plant telecommunications infrastructure design or delivery.
OSP validates knowledge related to outside plant design, including the ability to support infrastructure decisions that affect reliability, protection, capacity, and long-term performance.
This includes knowledge related to:
- Site surveys and project planning
- Route selection and pathway design
- Underground, buried, and aerial infrastructure
- Maintenance holes, handholes, and spaces
- Copper and optical fiber cabling considerations
- Grounding, bonding, and electrical protection
- Codes, standards, permitting, and right-of-way considerations

OSP candidates must meet current eligibility requirements before applying. Requirements may include outside plant design or installation experience, telecommunications industry experience, education, current BICSI credentials, and other professional qualifications.
