BICSI IN225: Installer 2, Copper Training

This course is a hands-on/application-focused course which sets the foundation of a copper-based structured cabling system installation. The course includes topics on professionalism, copper transmission principles and general safety practices associated with copper cabling. A significant amount of course time is spent on BICSI best practices for the installation, termination and testing of copper cable as outlined in the 8th edition of the Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM).

  • Why Should I Attend?

    As ICT systems become more complex, your need to be recognized for your knowledge of current and emerging installation practices becomes more critical.

    This course offers multiple opportunities for hands-on practice.

    Activities include learning to:

    • Perform advanced IDC terminations (210 and GigaBIX)
    • Terminate STP cable to patch panels and wall outlets
    • Terminate coaxial cable using a BNC connector
    • Test copper cabling installations

    The Installer 2, Copper (INSTC) exam is not included in the course fee. You must register for the exam separately.

  • Who Should Attend?

    This program is ideal for:

    • ICT installers with at least one year of verifiable cabling experience.
    • Anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge of the industry, learn new (copper installation) skills and continue to advance professionally.
    • Installer 1 certificate holders seeking the Installer 2, Copper (INSTC) credential.
    • Individuals planning to sit for the BICSI Installer 2, Copper (INSTC) exam (you must apply for the exam separately from the course).
  • What Are the Knowledge and Skill Requirements?

    Participants must be able to:

    • Distinguish between different colors
    • Possess manual dexterity to complete fine motor tasks
    • Stand for extended periods of time (e.g., 30 minutes)
    • Climb ladders
    • Lift and carry items weighing ≈22.7 kg (50 lb)
  • What Are the Prerequisites and Preparation Required?

    Students of this class may wish to first attend IN101 or gain equivalent experience and knowledge through on-the-job-training.

    BICSI recommends that all students who take this class have at least 1 year of verifiable ICT industry installation experience within the last five years.

    The skills in this course build on the basic skills and knowledge that an installer is likely to acquire during the first year on the job. For this reason, students will be expected to have basic knowledge of copper cabling media and know how to perform the following skills prior to attending class:

    • Install a pull string
    • Pull horizontal cable through a continuous conduit run
    • Perform IDC terminations on a 66 block, 110 block, LSA block and a BIX block
    • Terminate coaxial cable using an F connector
    • Test 4-pair cable with a pair scanner

     
    If you do not know how to perform any of these tasks or feel that you may not be fully prepared for this course, BICSI recommends that you complete the IN101: Installer 1 Training course first. IN101 covers these skills, as well as other foundational knowledge that will help you to succeed in the Installer 2, Copper class.

    BICSI strongly recommends reading Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM) before coming to class and/or taking the exam.

    For students who plan to take the exam, BICSI recommends that examinees spend at least 50 hours studying the ITSIMM.

    To successfully participate in the virtual classroom training, each attendee must have the following:

    • Laptop, desktop or tablet that meet the system requirements noted here.
    • Microphone and speakers (headset recommended**).
    • Standalone webcams and/or mobile device camera for class activities.
    • Internet connection - 1 Mbps or better (broadband recommended) | 3G connection or better (WiFi recommended for VoIP audio).
  • What Course Materials Are Required?

    To participate in this class—in-person or virtually—you will need access to:

    • Students must bring the Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM), print or electronic, to class. Click here to purchase.
    • Internet-enabled device with audio capability (headset recommended)
    • Personal or prescription safety glasses are recommended.

    • BICSI will provide and ship the classroom materials to the physical mailing address provided by each student. This includes student workbook, and classroom consumable materials.

  • Can I Earn Credit?

    Yes, you can earn 35 continuing education credits (CECs) toward an existing BICSI credentials recertification requirement upon successfully completing this program.
  • What Is the Attendance Policy?

    Participation in all originally scheduled days of the program is mandatory in order to receive the certificate of completion and 35 CECs.

    Participants who fulfill the attendance requirement will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the program. Please note that this is not the INSTC Certification, which requires a separate exam application (apply by clicking on link below).

  • How Long is this Course?

    This class takes place over a period of 4.5 days; 5 days if the Installer 2, Copper (INSTC) certification exam is desired. The exam is conducted in two parts: the hands-on exam (typically on a Friday afternoon) and the written exam is conducted at a Pearson VUE Testing Center of the examinee’s choosing.
