BICSI views learning as a life-long endeavor and places an emphasis upon continuing education as part of maintaining credentials and certifications. Within each three-year registration period (after the exam is passed), all credential holders must obtain BICSI offered or approved continuing education credits (CECs). These CECs must be of a technical nature and directly related to the particular area of specialty within the ICT industry. Credential holders must complete this requirement in order to renew their credential.

CECs

To receive continuing education credit, you must provide the BICSI Credentialing Department with your certificate of completion. Also, if it is not a BICSI course or a pre-recognized industry course, you must further provide the complete course description and course agenda including the course length in hours. If you choose a self-study curriculum such as computer- or Web-based training, you must include hard copy test results with at least 80% correct passing score, plus the amount of hours required to complete the training.

Renewal Extensions

BICSI does not normally approve requests for renewal extensions. Last minute extension requests due to job demands, company budgets, and changes in employment status, marital status, personal finances, mailing addresses, and other personal or professional reasons are not considered to be valid reasons. Issues involving a severe hardship such as a major medical emergency in the immediate family, natural disaster, or military deployment into a remote or hazardous area will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All extension requests must be documented, verifiable, and submitted prior to designation expiration date. A decision on the status of the request will be made in writing.

Renewal Reminder from the RCSC Committee

BICSI mails, publishes, and posts many courtesy renewal reminders each year. Over the renewal period each member will see these courtesy reminders many times. However, it is the individual members professional responsibility to ensure that all renewal requirements are met and submitted prior to expiration. BICSI provides its members with a; or posting service to keep track of CECs earned and conference attendance. This is a tracking service only, it is not intended to relieve the individual member of their professional responsibility to provide BICSI with the information so that it can be posted.

Last minute extension requests due to job demands, company budgets, employment status, personal finances, changes in marital status, changes in mailing addresses and other personal or professional reasons are not considered to be valid given the three year period involved. Extension requests based on such reasoning stand little chance for approval. Because there are so many opportunities to secure the necessary requirements in the three-year renewal period, the RSSC is very strict on granting an extension. The RSSC will grant an extension in cases involving extreme circumstances. Extensions have been granted, in the past, for severe and/or prolonged personal or family medical emergencies or extreme trauma, major natural disasters, and military conflict deployments. All extension requests must be in-writing with all necessary supporting documents attached. The supporting documents must be official and verifiable with contact names and phone numbers.

Remember Murphy's Law: Whatever can go wrong, will. Or Dr. Deming's: The lack of an individuals pro-action will allow circumstances to control their reactions. Don't let chance affect your future, plan ahead and allow for contingencies. To avoid these stressful, often embarrassing, and potentially costly last minute reactions, RCDD's should plan as far ahead as possible so that they have time to implement an alternate plan should circumstances require it.

If you have not met the requirements for renewal, please make arrangements before classes are full, professional demands alter your schedule or the unexpected happens. Many conferences and workshops are offered in each renewal period. There are countless training sessions that are available throughout the world. For those that cannot justify training due to travel costs, there is a wide selection of BICSI Connect, Web based, courses available at very reasonable rates. Additionally, many manufacturers and distribution vendors provide numerous opportunities for free training in various geographic areas and BICSI offers CECs at their Breakfast Clubs and Regional meetings. Be pro-active, not re-active. Your registration is valuable and you have worked hard for it, take control and don't let circumstances deprive you of it.
