TE350: BICSI Technician Training


COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to provide the necessary skillset of a structured cabling systems technician. A significant amount of course time will be spent on troubleshooting copper and optical fiber cable installations. In addition, TE350: Technician Training will cover project planning and implementation at the technician level. Additional topics will include site safety, site surveys, blueprint reading, bonding and grounding (earthing) and firestopping practices.

Material Requirements

  • E-Book or hard copy: Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM).
  • Order the ITSIMM online at bicsi.org/publications. The manual is not included in the course fee.
  • Laptop or mobile device
  • Personal or prescription safety glasses are recommended.

Pre-work Recommendations

  • At least three years of current ICT industry installation experience within the last five years is recommended for the course. Individuals who plan to take the exam after the class, this three years of experience is a requirement for the exam, not a recommendation.
  • Complete both IN225 and IN250 courses and/or obtain the Installer 2, Copper and Installer 2, Optical Fiber credentials prior to attending this class. Individuals not currently holding both the Copper and Optical Fiber Installer 2 (INSTC), (INSTF) credentials, or the Installer Level 2 credential, will receive four additional hands-on tasks and 30 additional written exam questions focused on copper and optical fiber topics to complete as part of the process.
  • In addition, read the ITSIMM before coming to class and/or taking the exam. For students who plan to take the exam, examinees should spend at least 50 hours studying the ITSIMM.

Who should attend?

This course will help students successfully lead an installation group or team using project management skills. This course will greatly benefit highly experienced ICT installers with at least three years of verifiable cabling experience; anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge of the industry, learn new skills and continue to advance professionally; and individuals planning to sit for the BICSI Technician exam.

Participants must be able to:

  • Distinguish between different colors
  • Possess manual dexterity to complete fine motor tasks
  • Climb ladders
  • Stand for extended periods of time (e.g., 30 minutes)
  • Lift and carry items weighing ≈22.7 kg (50 lb)

What will I learn?

After this course you will be able to:

  • Verify that telecommunications infrastructures have been installed properly.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting for copper and fiber cabling installation.
  • Perform basic project planning and implement tasks associated with cable installation projects.
  • Identify the common elements and design practices associated with installing specialty systems.
  • Describe the process for performing a retrofit of an existing telecommunication infrastructure.
  • Explain how network architecture enables information and resource sharing between users.
  • Describe how a data center's availability and operation requirements affect its cabling infrastructure.
  • Ensure that personnel comply with safety policies and procedures in a site safety plan.
  • Validate that installed components of a telecommunications bonding infrastructure have been installed properly.

How long is this course?

This class takes place over a period of 4.5 days; 5 days for students planning to take the hands-on exam to earn the certification. After successful completion of the hands-on exam, examinees will be required to take and pass the written exam at a Pearson Vue testing center of their choosing to earn certification.

Can I earn credit?

Earn 35 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) upon successfully completing this program.

What is the cancellation policy?

Class registration fees are refundable if a written cancellation request is received by BICSI no later than 11 business days prior to the first day of class. All subsequent cancellation requests will be subject to a cancellation fee of 25% of the class registration fee. Any cancellation request received within 11 business days prior to the first day of class will be subject to a late cancellation fee of 25% of the class registration fee. Cancellation requests must be submitted in writing by email to bicsi@bicsi.org or by fax to +1 813.971.4311.

The online exam application and a non-refundable application fee deadline is 15 business days prior to the exam date.An exam application may be expedited if received 5-14 business days prior to the exam date.

The final exam application and fee deadline is five business days prior to the exam date.Exam applications will not be processed after the deadline.

After the exam application is approved, it is valid for one year.
