"Building
a Strong Security Program," Dwayne Natwick & Nathan Benton,
N2TC, Inc.,
Commerce Township, Michigan
(3 CECs – RCDD, NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, WD Specialty,
ITS Installer 2 and ITS Technician)
Following the events of this decade, it has become a corporate responsibility
to document and maintain policies to protect personal and corporate
information assets, and they need to train all members of the organization
and their partners on these policies. A strong security program will
make everyone in the organization accountable and will protect the
flow of information and assets throughout the organization.
A security program is made up of three main elements:
the security policy, the security plan framework and the Corporate
Information Assurance Protection Program (CIAPP). These elements
create the foundation for implementation of projects and policies
that will protect the organization from physical and network threats.
This presentation will address these three elements and the importance
of industry best practices in creating and implementing projects
for physical and network security.

"The
HD RCDD," Earl Hennenhoeffer and Richard Snyder, Z-Band, Inc.,
Carlisle, Pennsylvania
(3 CECs - RCDD, NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, WD Specialty, ITS Installer
2 and ITS Technician)
There are two major trends that are affecting and significantly changing
the BICSI world. One is High Definition TV and the other is the merging
of the BICSI and the audiovisual (AV) industries.
High Definition is probably one of the most talked
about but least understood changes in the video world. Is it RF,
baseband or IP? Do I have to use coax or can UTP be used? Which
is better and why? This seminar will address those questions.
In addition, the structured cabling (BICSI) and
AV (InfoComm) worlds are rapidly converging. As such, an RCDD must
be able to understand key terminologies, such as 1080 i or 720 p
as well as slope, dB, resolutions and other AV terms. The purpose
of this seminar is not to make the BICSI member an AV expert, just
to improve their knowledge in this fast and important field.

"Realistic
Grounding Methods—Changes to the TDMM," Ken Michaels,
BellSouth Communication Systems, Altamonte Springs, Florida
(3 CECs - RCDD, NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, WD Specialty, ITS Installer
2 and ITS Technician)
Many changes have been incorporated in Chapter 8, Grounding &
Bonding section of the BICSI TDMM, 11th edition. This presentation
will itemize the significant changes of the chapter, explore the common
grounding myths that have infiltrated the telecommunications world,
and explain why, and when, to avoid relying on complex bonding and
grounding infrastructure guidelines, such as those contained within
the J-Std. 607 as a primary arrangement, for design criteria. Practical
design methods are suggested and as are tips to identify any site’s
most common grounding problems that can affect even the best design.

"20-Year-Old
Concept of Measuring a Building’s IQ Comes Full Circle,"
James Carlini, Carlini & Associates, East Dundee, Illinois
(3 CECs - RCDD, NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, WD Specialty, ITS Installer
2 and ITS Technician)
What "intelligent amenities" should a building have? What building
is right for a tenant comparing connectivity, reliability, automation
and other elements? Marketing a building or campus becomes totally
different once you ask "How smart a building do you need?" instead
of "How much space do you want to lease?"
Learn from James Carlini, who pioneered the whole
concept in 1985 and how his test was used to compare downtown buildings
and perform infrastructure assessments in places like Century City.
With his insights, he became the Mayor’s Consultant in planning
the Chicago 911 Center which is rated #1 in the country by the Homeland
Security Agency. What impact does measuring building intelligence
have today?

Field Testing of PC Connectors Utilizing an Interferometer," Charles
C. Lohrmann, RCDD/OSP Specialist, TPM, ITS Technician, Compass Telecommunications
Consulting Corporation, Fort Worth, Texas
(1 CEC - NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, ITS Installer 2 and ITS Technician)
Ever wonder why optical fiber connectors fail for no apparent reason?
The most probable cause is the physical connector and how the fiber
is retained and polished in the connector body. Until recently, field
testing of connector has been limited to using some type of magnifying
device, normally a 50 to a 400 power microscope. In reality, what
we see is a two dimensional view of a three dimensional object. This
presentation concerns the three dimensional field testing of optical
fiber connectors using interferometry. Presentation also includes
a live demonstration of interferometer testing.

"Convergence—Will
You Remain Viable?" Philip Lofgren, RCDD, Senior Associate, WB
Engineers, Boston, Massachusetts
(1 CEC - NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, WD Specialty, ITS Installer
2 and ITS Technician)
Nearly every business wants to operate in an atmosphere that promotes
the most reliable and up-to-date technological advances. As BICSI
members, ITS consultants, integrators, installation firms and manufacturers,
we must not only keep abreast of changing technologies and capabilities,
we should also be setting the standard for accommodating the most
reliable and forward-thinking technologies into our designs and into
our installations. ITS convergence is not a future concept; it is
here. Technological advances are driving out old school territoriality
issues between telephony, IT and facilities departments as educated
ITS professionals are able to demonstrate that shared infrastructures
need not compromise the operational objectives of their departmental
functions. This session addresses what ITS professionals need to know
in order to not only remain viable but to assume a leadership role
in what seems destined to occur.

With the advent of HDTV, the advantages of structured cabling are
becoming more pronounced. Nevertheless, in order to take advantage
of potential opportunities, one must understand the basics of RF
video over coax and UTP, IP video and baseband video, and how they
do or don’t fit into the structured cabling world.
Attend this General

in the LAN & Data Center," Doug Coleman, Corning Cable Systems,
Hickory, North Carolina
(1 CEC – NTS Specialty, ITS Installer 2 and ITS Technician)
Local area network (LAN) campus and building backbones as well as
data center backbones are migrating to higher cabled fiber counts
to meet system bandwidth needs. Ribbon cables are now being deployed
to meet this need, as they provide the highest fiber density relative
to cable diameter, maximize utilization of pathway and spaces and
facilitate ease of termination. This presentation will discuss the
utilization of ribbon cable in the LAN and data center with a focus
on cable design, MPO field and factory array connectors and MPO connector
polarity solutions.

"Broadband
Opportunities in the Connected Community," W. James Hettrick,
United States Connected Communities Association, Washington, D.C.
(1 CEC - RCDD, NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, WD Specialty, ITS Installer

New paradigms are forming in our society. A new, secure and superior
medium is replacing the antiquated copper plant as the necessary
tool for local communications. This gives us reasons for building
Municipal fiber networks. Our lives have become Multi-Media orientated.
Our degree of connectivity determines how successful we are as professionals.
A ‘Standard’ has been created and implemented that mandates
fiber and structured wiring for all new residential and commercial
developments. These building code modifications are the largest
single decision a community can make to enable the economy of their
business. Adoption of this ‘Standard’ for communications
infrastructure will future-proof these communities capabilities
to support new and ever demanding services. This action will necessitate
numerous opportunities for the future of the construction and inspection
industries.
